The answer to T-Rex Facts - Question 5

In which of these periods did dinosaurs evolve?

Dinosaurs evolved in the Triassic period. This was the first of the 3 long periods in the Mesozoic Era. It began about 252 million years ago after 'The Great Dying' which was the largest mass extinction in the earth's history. Over 95% of sea species and about 70% of the land vertebrates disappeared. Ongoing research as well as modelling is trying to give us a better understanding of why this happened. According to britannica.com:

"During the recovery of life in the Triassic Period, the relative importance of land animals grew. Reptiles increased in diversity and number, and the first dinosaurs appeared, heralding the great radiation that would characterize this group during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Finally the end of the Triassic saw the appearance of the first mammals - tiny, fur-bearing, shrew animals derived from reptiles."
